The Essential Solution To Your Ant Infestation

Nobody calls a pest controller about one ant. They call about the fourth consecutive week of ants, after the vinegar, the cinnamon, the supermarket spray and a fairly comprehensive reorganisation of the pantry have all failed in sequence.

The reason that sequence fails is almost always the same. Every one of those measures deals with the ants you can see, and the ants you can see are perhaps two per cent of the colony.

Green ants deserve a special mention because they're the ant most Townsville residents actually complain about. They're not in your kitchen. They're in the tree over your outdoor setting, and they will defend it aggressively.

Why supermarket sprays make ant problems worse

Two reasons, and the second one is genuinely counterproductive.

First, a surface spray kills foragers. The queen, the brood and the vast majority of workers are in the nest, entirely unaffected, and will replace the foragers within days.

Second, several species respond to chemical stress by budding. The colony splits, satellite queens leave with a portion of the brood, and one nest becomes three in different locations. Pharaoh ants and some Technomyrmex species do this reliably. You've turned a problem into a distributed problem.

How we treat ants

Nest targeting, not trail spraying. The approach depends on whether we can find the nest.

▪      Baiting. A slow acting bait matched to what the species actually feeds on, sugar based or protein based. Foragers carry it home and share it through the colony. Slow by design, because a bait that kills too fast never reaches the queen.

▪      Direct nest treatment. Where the nest is accessible, in a wall cavity, under paving or in a tree, we treat it directly. Fastest result available.

▪      Perimeter treatment. A non repellent residual band around the building, so foragers crossing it pick up and transfer the active ingredient rather than being turned back at the boundary.

Green ants and outdoor living area

Green ants, or weaver ants, stitch living leaves together with silk produced by their larvae. A mature colony can occupy several trees and hold territory across an entire backyard.

They're also genuinely useful. In orchards they're a recognised biological control agent, and they'll keep other pests off your fruit trees. Fire ants and your obligations

Red imported fire ants are a notifiable biosecurity pest in Queensland. If you suspect them, do not disturb the nest, do not attempt to treat it, and report it to Biosecurity Queensland.

They're identified by the nest rather than the ant: a loose, dome shaped mound of fine soil with no visible entry hole, and ants of visibly varying sizes within one colony. Photograph it from a safe distance and report it.

Are green ant bites dangerous?

Painful rather than dangerous for most people. Green ants bite and then spray formic acid into the wound, which is why it stings well after the bite. Wash the area, apply a cold pack, and seek medical advice if there is any sign of a broader allergic reaction.

Should I remove every green ant nest in my yard?

Not necessarily. Green ants are territorial and suppress other pest insects, which makes them genuinely useful in fruit trees. We generally recommend treating only the nests that conflict with how you use the space.

Is ant treatment safe around pets and vegetable gardens?
