Three things, and the first one is the one people underestimate.
Panel output. Droppings on the panel surface shade cells directly, and a shaded cell drags down the output of the whole string, not just its own contribution. Accumulated soiling on a residential array measurably reduces generation.
Roof damage. Bird droppings are acidic. On colorbond, on flashings, on fixings and on gutters, sustained exposure accelerates corrosion. Nesting material also blocks gutters and valleys, which in a Townsville wet season means water backing up under the roof sheet.
Health and mess. Accumulated droppings carry genuine respiratory risk, contaminate rainwater tanks fed from the roof, and attract secondary pests. Bird mites in particular become a problem once a nest is abandoned, and they will move down into the house looking for a host.
Why spikes and deterrents don't solve it
Spikes work on flat ledges and parapets. Under a solar array they're the wrong tool, because there's no ledge to spike, and pigeons simply nest between them.
Ultrasonic devices, reflective tape, plastic owls and gels all have the same failure mode: pigeons habituate. Within a few weeks the deterrent becomes furniture. Anything that relies on frightening a bird out of a site it has already chosen has a limited shelf life.

How solar panel proofing is installed
Galvanised or PVC coated mesh is clipped to the panel frame around the full perimeter of the array, closing the gap between panel edge and roof surface.
It's clipped rather than screwed, drilled or glued. Nothing penetrates the panel frame, nothing touches the roof sheet, and nothing voids your solar warranty. That last point matters and it's worth asking any installer directly.
The array is cleaned and the area disinfected before mesh goes on. Sealing a nest and its accumulated droppings under mesh solves the pigeon problem and creates a mite problem, which is a bad trade.
Roof, eave and commercial work
Beyond solar, the common Townsville jobs are gable and eave gaps, roof void entry points (often the same gaps used by rodents, see rodent control in Townsville), verandah and carport rafters, and commercial buildings where pigeons roost on structural steel above loading docks and entrances.

Will bird mesh void my solar panel warranty?
Not when installed correctly. We clip mesh to the panel frame without drilling, screwing or adhering anything to the panels or the roof sheet. Ask any installer directly how they fix the mesh, because some methods do create warranty problems.
Do the droppings really affect my solar output?
Yes. Shading from droppings reduces the output of an entire panel string rather than just the affected cell, and accumulated soiling on a residential array produces a measurable drop in generation.
What happens to the birds already nesting there?
We clean out the nesting material and disinfect the area before installing mesh, so nothing is sealed in. Where there are active nests with young, timing is adjusted accordingly.
Will spikes work instead? They are cheaper.
