New national rules on rat bait, effective 2026

In March 2026 the APVMA (the body that regulates every pest control chemical used in Australia) suspended the registration of the five most powerful rat and mouse poisons on the market: brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, difethialone and flocoumafen. These are called second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides, or SGARs, and the suspension runs for twelve months from 24 March 2026 while a longer term restriction is worked out.

The reason is documented harm to native wildlife. A rat that has fed on SGAR bait can carry a lethal dose for days before it dies, and anything that eats it in the meantime, owls in particular, is poisoned too. Vets and wildlife carers have been raising this for years, and the regulator has now acted on it.

It is not a ban. SGAR products remain available under a deemed permit, but only under strict new conditions: bait stations must be tamper-resistant and weather-resistant, placed no more than two metres from a building, never applied directly into a burrow, and never left running for more than 35 days without checking the infestation and the treatment's effectiveness. Dead rodents have to be searched for and removed at every visit specifically to reduce the risk of secondary poisoning, and gloves are mandatory when handling bait or carcasses.

For retail products bought over the counter, the changes go further. Pack sizes are now capped, and outdoor domestic use of SGAR bait is no longer permitted at all. A box of rat bait from the hardware store can no longer legally be placed outside a home.
