Flea and Tick Treatment in Townsville

Fleas in a Townsville home rarely stay a small problem for long. The climate doesn't give them a winter to slow down in, which means a population that would take months to build up south of the border can get going in a few weeks here.

We treat fleas and ticks as a two-part programme, from $299, because that's what the biology actually requires. Here's why one visit isn't enough, and what the second one is for.

Why it's two visits, not one

Roughly ninety-five per cent of a flea population is never on the animal. It's in the carpet, the bedding and the yard as eggs, larvae and pupae. The pupal stage in particular is protected inside a resistant cocoon and can sit dormant for weeks before hatching, which is why a single treatment that looks like it's worked often sees fleas reappear about three weeks later.

Our first visit targets the adult population and breaks the breeding cycle with a growth regulator. The second visit, roughly two to three weeks later, catches the generation that was still protected as pupae during the first treatment. Skipping the second visit is the single most common reason a flea job doesn't hold.

Western and Thuringowa suburbs

The largest residential population in the city, mostly brick and tile on slab from the 1980s onward.

First visit

Targets the adult population and breaks the breeding cycle with a growth regulator.

The gap (2-3 weeks)

Pupae sheltered in their cocoons hatch. Most of the population is never on your pet.

Second visit

Catches the generation that was still protected as pupae the first time round.

Fleas and ticks are different jobs

Fleas are almost always the driver, but ticks come up regularly in Townsville too, particularly on properties backing onto bushland or with dogs that get out into longer grass. Paralysis ticks are present along the Queensland coast, and while the risk here is lower than further south, a tick problem on a pet is worth taking seriously and mentioning when you book, since it can change where we focus treatment around the yard.

Indoor treatment

Targeted application to carpet, particularly along skirting edges, under furniture and in pet resting areas, plus timber and tiled floors and soft furnishings where relevant. We combine an adult-killing component with an insect growth regulator, which is what actually breaks the cycle rather than just knocking down what's visible on the day.

Yard treatment

If your pet has any outdoor access, the yard is part of the problem, not a separate one. Fleas and ticks concentrate in shaded, sheltered spots rather than open lawn: under the house, under decking, in garden beds where a pet rests, and around kennels. We treat the actual harbourage rather than the whole yard uniformly.

Getting the most out of both visits

  1. Vacuum thoroughly before the first visit, including under furniture and along skirting boards, then dispose of the bag outside immediately.
  2. Wash pet bedding on the hottest safe cycle before we arrive.
  3. Keep pets off treated areas until dry, generally a few hours.
  4. Mow the lawn and clear yard clutter before the outdoor component, so the treatment reaches the ground rather than sitting on debris.
  5. Book the second visit when we suggest it rather than waiting to see if it's needed. The timing is based on the flea life cycle, not a guess.

What it costs

From $299 both visits included

Our flea and tick treatment, covering both visits, is from $299. This is a starting price, current at time of writing and subject to change, and the exact cost depends on property size and whether the yard needs treating as well as inside. See what pest control costs in Townsville for our full rate card.

Vacating a rental?

If you're moving out of a property where a pet has lived, your lease may specifically require a professional flea treatment certificate before your bond is returned, separate from any general end-of-lease pest treatment. See bond return and end of lease treatment for what that involves and how the two services fit together.

Frequently asked questions

Why do fleas come back after I've had the house treated?

Almost always because of the protected pupal stage, which can remain dormant for weeks after the first treatment before hatching. This is exactly why our programme includes a second visit two to three weeks later, timed to catch that generation before it establishes.

Do I need the yard treated as well as inside?

If your pet has any outdoor access, yes. Fleas and ticks concentrate in shaded areas like under the house, under decking and around kennels rather than open lawn, and an untreated yard will simply reinfest a freshly treated house.

How much does flea and tick treatment cost?

From $299 for our standard two-visit programme, covering both the initial treatment and the follow-up. This is a starting price, subject to change, and we confirm the exact cost before starting any work.

Are paralysis ticks a real risk in Townsville?

They're present along the Queensland coast, though less prevalent here than further south. It's still worth mentioning to us if your pet has picked up ticks, since it changes where we focus yard treatment, and worth discussing prevention directly with your vet.

Is this the same as the treatment I need for my rental bond?

Not necessarily. A flea and tick treatment is specifically for an active flea or tick problem, or for satisfying a pet clause in a lease. A general bond return treatment is a separate, broader service. See bond return and end of lease treatment for the distinction.
