Mosquito and Biting Midge Control in Townsville

There's a specific moment, somewhere around six in the evening from about November onwards, when a Townsville backyard becomes uninhabitable. You've cooked, poured a drink, sat down, and within four minutes you're back inside.

Why Townsville is so bad for this

Geography and climate, working together. The city sits between the Ross River, coastal wetlands, mangrove flats and cane country. The wet season delivers standing water everywhere at once. And there's no cold season to interrupt the breeding cycle.

Add the tropical planting that makes Townsville gardens beautiful, bromeliads, palms, dense shrubbery, and you have a yard that provides both breeding sites and daytime harbourage within a few metres of your outdoor setting.

How a barrier treatment works

Mosquitoes don't fly around all day. They rest, in cool shaded vegetation, on the undersides of leaves, in dense foliage, under decks and in shrubbery, and they emerge to feed at dawn and dusk.

A barrier treatment applies a residual product to that harbourage rather than into the air. Mosquitoes landing to rest pick it up. The treatment does its work across the whole day rather than in the thirty seconds a fogger is airborne.

What gets treated: the underside of dense foliage, hedge and shrub interiors, the shaded side of fences, under decking and stairs, palm skirts and the base of tropical planting. What doesn't get treated: open lawn, flowering plants where bees are active, vegetable gardens, and anything over a pond or water feature.

Coastal suburbs get midges worst. Bushland Beach, Rowes Bay, Belgian Gardens and the Northern Beaches sit close to mangrove and tidal flats, which is where midges breed. Breeding site control does the heavy lifting

Killing adult mosquitoes is temporary. Killing larvae is not, and a surprising proportion of the mosquitoes biting you were born within twenty metres of where you're sitting.

The sites in an average Townsville yard: bromeliad leaf axils, palm frond bases, blocked roof gutters, pot plant saucers, unscreened rainwater tanks, boat and trailer covers, buckets, wheelbarrows, children's play equipment, tyres, and the corrugations in a poorly draining shade sail.

Treating before an event

Weddings, parties, functions. Book the treatment three to five days out rather than the day before. The residual needs time to establish, and treating on the morning of an event delivers the least benefit for the most inconvenience.

Safety around pets, kids and ponds

Treated foliage is safe once dry, generally two to four hours in Townsville conditions, though humidity extends it. We avoid flowering plants where bees are active, we don't treat over ponds or water features, and we work around vegetable gardens with buffer zones.
