Termite Mud Tubes and What They Are Telling You
Of all the evidence termites leave behind, mud tubes are the most honest. Frass can be confused with sawdust. Hollow timber requires you to know what solid timber sounds like. Sagging floors could be a dozen things. But a pencil width earthen tube running up a concrete stump is a subterranean termite highway, and there is no innocent explanation for it.
Why subterranean termites build tubes at all
Termite workers are blind, soft bodied and lose moisture through their cuticle almost immediately in open air. They also have no defence at all against ants, which will destroy an exposed termite column within minutes.
So they never travel in the open. Everywhere they go, they build a covered road out of soil, saliva and faecal matter, maintaining the dark, humid, ant free conditions of the nest all the way to the food. A mud tube is a portable piece of nest, extended one grain at a time.
Which is precisely why finding one matters. It means termites have committed serious effort to reaching something in your building. They don't build speculatively.
The four types of mud tube
Not every tube means the same thing, and telling them apart tells you where to look next.

Working tubes are the ones that demand immediate action. Drop tubes are arguably worse, because they mean the termites got to your timber first and are building the road back down afterwards.
Where to look on a Townsville home
Start under the house. On a raised Queenslander, walk the subfloor with a torch and check every stump, pier and ant cap. Ant caps are the metal collars on top of stumps, and they don't stop termites. They force them into the open where you can see them, which only works if somebody looks.
Then work the external perimeter. Check where garden beds, mulch or lawn build up against the wall. Check behind downpipes, air conditioning units, hot water systems and pot plants. Check expansion joints in slabs and any point where a service pipe passes through concrete.
Inside, check the back of built in cupboards, under the kitchen sink, inside the linen press and anywhere the wall meets the floor behind furniture that never moves. Termites favour the parts of your house you don't look at, which is not coincidence so much as arithmetic.
Active or abandoned: how to tell
An abandoned tube is dry, crumbly, pale and often already broken. An active tube is darker, damp to the touch and structurally solid.
The definitive test is to remove a small section, roughly a centimetre, and check again after a day or two. If it's been resealed, the colony is active and monitoring the route. If it's still open after a week, that section is probably abandoned.
And now the important caveat.
Why you shouldn't break the tube open
Every instinct says to crack it and see what's inside. Please don't, at least not before an inspection.
Termites respond to a breach by treating that route as compromised. They seal it off, abandon it and open a new one, often through a concealed path you'll never find. You've converted a visible problem into an invisible one, which is a genuinely bad trade.
You've also destroyed evidence. The tube tells a technician which direction the termites are travelling, roughly how large the colony is, and often which species you're dealing with, because construction style varies between Coptotermes, Schedorhinotermes and Mastotermes. That information shapes the treatment.
And there's a third reason. Modern termite control frequently works by using the existing active workings as a delivery point, either dusting directly into them or placing an in ground station on the foraging route. An intact active tube is an asset. Breaking it throws away your best treatment access.
What happens after you find one
Photograph it. Get a wide shot showing where it is on the building and a close shot showing the texture. Note whether it's running up or down.
Leave it completely alone. Don't spray it, don't break it, don't paint over it.
Then check the rest of the property properly. Where there's one tube there are usually more, and the pattern across a building tells you far more than any single tube does. Read the nine signs of termites in a Townsville home while you're at it.
Then book a termite inspection. If the tube is a working tube, that's a same week job rather than a next month job. Colonies don't slow down while you think about it, and in Townsville's climate they don't take a winter off either.

Yes, and this is why the absence of tubes proves nothing. Termites entering through slab cracks, cavity walls, expansion joints or service penetrations can reach timber entirely concealed within the structure, with no external tube ever visible.
Will ant caps on my stumps stop termites?
No. Ant caps are inspection aids rather than barriers. They are designed to force termites to build around the outside of the cap where a tube becomes visible. They only work if somebody inspects the subfloor regularly enough to see it.
Should I spray insecticide on a mud tube?
No. A surface spray kills a small fraction of the colony and causes the rest to abandon that route and re-enter elsewhere, usually somewhere concealed. It also contaminates the workings, which can prevent a technician from using them as a treatment point.
